S.C.R.C. History:                                View our 5 year Plan

Neighbourhoods Alive is a community-based strategy helping to build healthy neighbourhoods. It is a program of the Manitoba Government which was first started in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson. The Neighbourhoods Alive! program was expanded to cover five more communities, the City of Selkirk being one of them.   NA! supports and encourages community-driven revitalization efforts which include initiatives such as housing, employment and training, education and recreation, safety and crime prevention. The aim of NA! is to support the goals established by the community with funding and planning assistance.

In September 2007, a community meeting was held at the Gordon Howard Senior Centre at which the Neighbourhoods Alive program was introduced.   An Interim Advisory Committee was created from those who had attended and had expressed an interest in becoming involved. The I.A.C. members later became the Board of Directors when the Selkirk Community Renewal Corporation was incorporated in December 2008.

The IAC held its first meeting December 13, 2007 which was facilitated by Garry Loewen, an NA! consultant.  At that meeting, a list of needs and priorities was developed as a starting point. Through community consultation a list of priorities was developed similar to the list that was developed at that first meeting of the I.A.C.

The results were: 1. Youth, 2. Crime/Safety, 3. Housing, 4. Public Transportation, 5. Manitoba Ave. East and 6. Economic Development.

The mandate of the IAC was to advise NA! on revitalization priorities for the community and develop a 5-year neighbourhood renewal plan.

A consultant, Robert Nicol, was hired to assist the I.A.C. to develop a 5-year community plan and a one-year operational plan.  Focus groups were held on each of the priorities to establish a list of initiatives that became the focus of the community plan. The plan was completed in April 2009.

The Selkirk Community Renewal Corporation operates as a non-profit entity within the boundaries of the City of Selkirk. It is currently governed by a 10-member Board of Directors.

The Board regularly meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month, except for July, August and December, at 11:00 a.m. at our office: 226B Manitoba Ave.

The Selkirk Community Renewal Corporation is funded by Neighbourhoods Alive through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and receives  an operating grant for the year April 1 -  March 31. The SCRC has established an office at 226B Manitoba Ave and the Executive Director is Darlene Swiderski.

The SCRC accepts and reviews funding requests from local, non-profit organizations and makes recommendations to Neighbourhoods Alive based on the priorities of the community plan. There are 2 intake dates for proposals – April 15 and October 15.
